The National Federation of Women’s Institutes has been campaigning for an end to violence against women for over 50 years – with a particular focus on rural areas.

End Violence Against Women is a coalition of individuals and organisations who campaign for better support services in the UK – for victims of domestic abuse. For example, it lobbies the government and local authorities.

Shockingly, a recent report published by End Violence Against Women (and the Equality and Human Rights Commission) revealed that support services are severely under-funded or simply do not exist in many parts of the UK. For example, only a minority of local authorities have a range of support services and 1 in 3 local authorities have no specialised services for victims of domestic abuse at all.

Interestingly, Glasgow has the best support services in the UK and there’s a lack of services in the East, South East and South West of England.

The report is particularly relevant in terms of tackling domestic abuse in rural areas, because a lack of available support services is one of the key problems faced by women living in rural areas.

Women’s Aid is the UK’s leading charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children. Its website contains a wealth of useful information for victims – and also for people like you who are committed to tackling domestic abuse in your community.

For example, you’ll find a directory of support services for women and children suffering domestic abuse, posters and leaflets to download and information specifically aimed at children, young people and those living with a disability.
